LEAGUE POINTS DOUBLED ON DISAPPOINTING DAY
Barking had another trip to the outskirts of Heathrow airport and although they came away with a point to take our league tally to two, but ultimately it was a disappointing day that should of promised and delivered more. The run up to the game was not helped by the departure of Mitchell Ware to Tilbury, but he was replaced by the ever reliable Montel Joseph whose second half double kept Ashford at bay. Daniel Flemming failed a fitness test and was replaced by Joe Bruce and with Nana Boakye-Yiadom still unavailable Albert Akinremi started in his place.
It was Akinremi who had a chance to mark his first start in the first minute but Ashford keeper Sam Mason denied him and as the game settled down Ashford came back at us and some loose defending left Daniel Brown in on goal but he was foiled by a combination of Callum Thompson and Joe Bruce. Despite some threatening corners and half chances it took until 35 minutes for us to come close to scoring when Johnny Ashman who again was a consistent threat for us collected the ball some distance from goal and produced a shot which smacked the bar. With Montel Joseph saving a shot from Brown and then Mason doing the same from Ashman it was all square at the interval.
Barking made a change at the interval with Akinremi being replaced by Junior Dadson, but it was Ashford who seized the initiative after just three minutes a cross from our right found the lurking Daniel Brown who headed home Ashford’s second league goal of the season. Duly roused the men in blue hit back but Kiernan Hughes-Mason shot from outside the box struck the post with Mason stranded. Ashman had two shots: both off target but on 58 minutes a ball into the Ashford box found Abs Seymour who chested the ball down and fired it into the net to make it one apiece. Despite Dadson’s best efforts he could not keep one effort down and the other found a barrier in Mason’s feet, then came the Joseph’s heroics: firstly denying Brown with his hands after a Bruce slip and then Ivan Machado with his feet when both players looked set to score. Joseph then made another save at his near post as he did his best to cement his place as our number one. Dadson had one further shot which just cleared bar but it was not enough to claim the extra two points.
On Tuesday evening after five consecutive away league fixtures is a home match against Waltham Abbey who themselves had a disappointing result at Chipstead on Saturday and will no doubt be looking to bounce back.
