BARKING DRAW AGAINST LEAGUE LEADERS
A first goal for Toib Adeyemi in a Barking shirt was enough for Barking as they earned a deserved point over league leaders AFC Hornchurch. The away side had taken the lead just before half-time but the Blues fought back in the second half – eventually breaking Hornchurch down and securing as point.
The first 15 minutes saw two early chances for AFC Hornchurch – first a cross from the wing was headed over at the near post before a corner to the far post was volleyed but cleared the bar. With 30 minutes on the clock Barking forced Mott into his first save as he denied former Urchin Martin Tuohy from a narrow angle as the Blues peppered the Hornchurch box with dangerous looking crosses. Hornchurch went close again 2 minutes later this time through their own dangerous cross as the ball was powered in from the left wing but flashed across goal. After good work by Alan Taylor and Kiernan Hughes-Mason there was a chance for Billy Jones but his effort was too close to Mott. Hornchurch had the lead after 40 minutes – Barking conceded a penalty as Hussain Jaffa stretched to poke the ball away from Purcell but could only bring the player down. Purcell dusted himself down to take the kick. Emmanuel Olajide guessed the right way and managed to get a hand on the ball but it was simply too powerful and Hornchurch had the lead. Barking nearly had an immediate equaliser – a corner was headed to the edge of the box where it found Jones, with not much space his prodded volley dipped and hit the bar before being cleared.
Barking resumed the second half on the front foot and nearly had their equaliser after some impressive football but an attempt by Albert Levett was too close to Mott. Hornchurch were still dangerous going forward however as a cutback from the left wing was skied over the bar just before the 60 minute mark. The best chance however fell to Purcell after 69 minutes – a counter attack saw him through on goal with just Olajide to beat and as Olajide raced from goal to narrow the angle he did just enough to divert Purcell’s effort around the post with his foot. The importance of the save was recognised four minutes later as a long throw from Ricky Tarbard evaded everyone before finding Hughes-Mason at the far post – his stinging volley was saved by the body of Mott but the ball span towards goal and Toib Adeyemi was fastest to react and poked the ball home from extremely close range. Hornchurch nearly regained the lead after 77 minutes a cross found a Hornchurch striker in the box but it was volleyed over the bar.
The last few minutes saw efforts for Dan Gilchrist and Ben O’Brien blocked but the Blues earned themselves a deserved point against the league leaders to continue their impressive form against the teams above them.
