Beaten 2-1 at bottom club Romford in their previous outing, having then seen a home match with high-flying Bowers fall victim to the Beast from the East at the weekend, Blues came away empty-handed against next-to-bottom Cheshunt.

Blues boss Justin Gardner had claimed his side were the underdogs against the Ambers, whose form has improved under new boss Craig Edwards – the former Barking manager.

And his fears were realised as the visitors claimed all three points to boost their hopes of survival.

Only seven minutes had been played when hotshot Jason Hallett opened the scoring and Barking suffered a blow soon after as Abs Seymour had to be repalced by Albert Levett.

They were were back on level terms on the half-hour mark through Kiernan Hughes-Mason, who claimed his eighth goal of the campaign.

But Cheshunt regained the lead six minutes before the break, with an own goal credited to Barking goalkeeper Emmanuel Olajide, and moved 3-1 up just eight minutes into the second half through Emiel Aiken.

Blues hit back with five minutes left as Toib Adeyemi grabbed his second goal of the season, but it proved only a consolation as Cheshunt held on for victory.

Defeat left Gardner’s men in eighth place and six points off a play-off spot and they are set to visit Maldon & Tiptree, who currently occupy the last spot in sixth, on Saturday.
