CHESHUNT GIVE BARKING THE OLD ONE-TWO

Cheshunt progressed to the second knock-out stage of the Velocity Trophy by getting the better of Barking with two goals in five minutes after the Blues had taken the lead from the penalty spot.

Justin Gardner used this game as an opportunity to look at some younger players with the youngest being 16 year old Joshua Roach who is currently on a work experience loan from West Ham United.

With just three minutes gone the Barking defence was all at sea when a Cheshunt player breaks through but his cross thankfully finds no team mate and the danger goes away. The home side strive to get into the game and around the ten-minute mark they force three corners with no success. On 17 good work from Michael Dixon forces a corner but Johnny Ashman’s flag kick only manages to find the side netting. Just a minute Barking though they had gone in front when good work by Sherri Artmeladze who then frees Dixon, who then crosses to Johnny Ashman who finds the net but the goal was ruled out for offside by the Assistant Referee’s flag. Ricky Tarbard had our best chance on 26 when his goal bound shot is turned away by Ambers keeper Harry Girling with a fine one handed save. Roach in the Barking goal has a scare on 32 when trying to make a routine save the ball rears up and hits him the chest and although the ball bounces away, he is able to recover with no damage done. However, in the end neither side manage to make the vital breakthrough and it is all square at the interval.

After the interval both sides demonstrate lots of running, energy and industry but little in the way of chances and goalmouth action to show for their efforts. Then as there seems to be nothing happening three goals arrive in just five minutes: firstly, Artmeladze after delivering a cross goes down in the Cheshunt box and the Referee awards Barking a penalty and then after consultation with his assistant ratifies his decision. Michael Dixon steps up and as usual confidently beats Girling to put the Blues in front, the lead lasts just three minutes when a Cheshunt shot slams against the post and Ryan Moss is on hand to tap home and level the scores. The comeback is complete on 61 when Dartford loanee Norman Wabo fires home from the right-hand side and the Premier Division side are in front. In an effort to draw level Barking bring on Miles Buffong, Oluwatobi Popoola and Richmond Obioraejiasi for their club debuts but try as they might no equaliser arrives and with five minutes to go only a good save from Roach prevents a further goal.

So, Barking exit the Velocity Trophy and Cheshunt go on to visit East Thurrock United in the next round, we are at home this coming Saturday in the league when fourth from bottom Northwood are the visitors to Mayesbrook Park. Hopefully we can get our first win of 2020 and collect the three points.
