Peter Webster

Barking got the better of a young and spirited Dagenham & Redbridge XI thanks to a cheeky backheeled finish from Billy Jones early in the second half of the Peter Webster Memorial Trophy meeting.

Ernest Okoh then weaved his way apast three players on the left wing before bursting into the box and firing into the roof of the net moments after coming on as a substitute.

But Dagenham showed great desire to not let their heads drop with 15-year-old Mekhi Hyde displaying great movement to pull a goal back immediately after.

A neat finish from Jay Knight in the 64th minute sealed the win for Barking ahead of the new Isthmian League season and joint manager Justin Gardner was pleased with their preparations.

He said: “Dagenham brought a strong side and the fixture was a good test of fitness. We gave away a sloppy goal but both keepers made some great saves.

“Going forward we are strong, having scored 27 goals in pre-season, and we will look to remain undefeated going into our first game of the season.”

Dagenham Academy manager Micah Hyde remained positive despite the defeat and admitted his young side were “disappointed not to get the win”.

The young squad went into the match boasting a 7-0 winn over Sutton United and a credible draw against Essex Senior League side Great Wakering Rovers and Hyde said: “The academy are creating a team with a winning ethos, encouraging them to go out and express themselves and not to be afraid to make mistakes because this will prepare them for the step up into the men’s game.”
