Barking and Saffron Walden face replay
Barking were forced to settle for a replay after a goalless stalemate against Thurlow Nunn side Saffron Walden Town in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. The Blues had the majority of the possession but struggled to break down SWT and create good chances. The two sides will do battle again on Tuesday at Catons Lane.
Steve Willis had the first chance after three minutes as a corner went past everyone but his volley was kept away from goal by the goalkeeper. Shortly after there was some good interplay between Dan Gilchrist and Goldy Capela leaving Capela in some space just outside the box but his powerful attempt was just over the crossbar. It took 20 minutes for SWT to have their first chance and it was the best chance of the game to that point – a corner was headed down in the six yard box where it was met by another attacker who flicked the ball towards goal – luckily for the Blues Ollie Bowles was alive to the danger and tipped the ball over the bar. Barking continued to pressure and Billy Jones saw his goal bound shot blocked shortly after. The Blues continued to threaten as half-time approached – Alan Taylor attempted to repeat his heroics from Monday night but saw his curled attempt clear the bar. Dan Fitzsimons attempted to volley home from a corner after a scramble but the shot was blocked with Ricky Tarbard also forcing the goalkeeper into a save from the resultant corner. Akwasi Marfo thought he had scored in the final minute of the half after jinking down the left wing but his cross/shot clipped the post before going wide.
Blues continued in the ascendancy in the second half – Dan Gilchrist having an early chance after good work by Capela but his chance from just outside the box cleared the bar. There was three chances in three minutes for Barking just before the 60 minute mark – Fitzsimons saw his header go wide before Billy Jones flashed a shot across goal. The best chance came last as the SWT goalkeeper could only parry Taylor’s shot – Jones collected the ball at a narrow angle and powered an effort towards goal but the goalkeeper was able to get back to his feet and palm the ball out of play. SWT were still dangerous on the counter and reminded the Bostik North side of this after 65 minutes as they nearly found a route to goal over the top but Tabard was alert and managed to poke the ball away from danger. Both sides struggled to create chances as the game entered the last 15 minutes – SWT had a free kick which evaded everyone but would have been trouble for the Blues had anyone managed to get a touch to it. A short corner after 82 minutes led to a cross from the returning Max Watters which found Jones but he could only direct his header wide. Bowles was forced into his second good save of the match again from a corner after 88 minutes as a far post corner was headed back across goal but Bowles was equal to it.
The Blues had one final chance from a corner by Seymour as Fitzsimons rose highest but his header was too close to the SWT goalkeeper who was able to collect. The goalless draw does represent the Blues’ first clean sheet of the season but they’ll be looking for their first win of the season on Tuesday.
