BARKING KNOCKED OUT ON BOXING DAY
The Blues felt a lack of Christmas cheer on Boxing Day as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at Mayesbrook Park at the hands of bogey side Witham Town. Pat Ahern headed Witham in the lead during the first while Elliot Ronto scored the second late on to secure the points.
The first chance fell to Barking after 16 minutes – a long throw was flicked on by Martin Tuohy and found Billy Jones but his looping volley landed on the top of the net. Dan Gilchrist also went close after 22 minutes after cutting inside but he only found the side netting. Barking forced Witham keeper Bobby Mason into his first save shortly after as he palmed away a free kick from Barking captain Abs Seymour. Barking called Mason into action again from a Seymour free kick after 28 minutes – Tuohy headed the ball back across goal and Jones saw his effort while stretching saved by Mason with Gilchrist clearing the bar with the rebound. Despite these chances it was Witham who struck first after 34 minutes as a corner from the left found Pat Ahern who rose highest at the far post to nod the ball home. There was a chance for Elliot Ronto to double Witham’s lead as the ball fell to him inside the box but he skied his effort.
Barking got the ball on target after 55 minutes as a corner fell to Albert Levett – his volley was sliced but a deflection from the defender took the ball into the hands of Mason. Five minutes later and Martin Tuohy had a chance at goal thanks to a cutback from Jordan Peart but the effort was too close to Mason. Barking struggled to carve out any further chances and the result seemed certain after 80 minutes as a left wing cross was palmed away by Bowles but fell at the feet of Elliot Ronto who smacked the ball home to double Witham’s lead. Barking nearly had an immediate route back into the game as Tuohy latched onto a through ball by Hughes-Mason and managed to round the Witham keeper but found himself wide of goal – Tuohy managed to put the ball across goal but no one managed to get a final touch and Witham cleared.
There was final chance for Barking as a corner led to a scramble with the ball falling at the feet of Jones from a few yards out but Mason did well to dive across goal to deny Jones and his volleyed attempt as Witham came away with all three points.
