BARKING FIRE BLANKS AT BEDFONT
Bedfont’s very smart recreation ground is on the outskirts of Heathrow airport and the shouts of the players and supporters are regularly drowned out by the roar of airplane engines passing overhead. However today there was not that much to shout about as although both sides created chances, they failed to capitalise on any of them and a stalemate resulted.
For Barking the positives are a first league point of the season and in addition a clean sheet. There were four changes from Monday’s defeat at Hertford: out went Jack Roult, Ryan Mallett, Jed Chouman, Emmanuel Ighorae to be replaced by Callum Thompson, Donnell Anderson, Abs Seymour and Fahad Nyanja.
Post match saw the return of Kiernan Hughes-Mason after his year away playing in New Zealand.
Johnny Ashman was Barking’s early weapon making several runs and forcing several early corners: one of which causing a clearance from near the goal line. A Callum Thompson shot from distance was well held by Bedfont keeper Harry Churchill and Nana Boakye-Yiadom’s effort from an acute angle went wide. Bedfont for their part had a snapshot that went wide and from a Mitchell Ware save, the rebound was put over the bar. Fahad Nyanja’s through ball put Abs Seymour through on goal but Churchill was out quickly to meet him and snuff out the danger and at the break it was all square.
In the second half the opening exchanges were equal but Bedfont has a good chance to go ahead but their attacker shot wide when well placed. Ashman continued to threaten with two efforts saved by Churchill and then a free kick which the home keeper could only push away but not into the path of a Barking player. Junior Dadson replaced Fahad Nyanja on 64 minutes to try and increase the pressure on the home side, but he nearly inadvertently became a provide for Bedfont when his loose pass was intercepted and played through to John Roberts who only found the side netting when well placed to score.
In the end both sides settled for a draw and we now move on to Tuesday evening and finally we have a game at Mayesbrook Park when Grays Athletic are our opponents in a Velocity trophy group match.
