Defeat left the Blues in ninth place and seven points behind sixth-placed Heybridge Swifts, who have two games in hand, with only six matches remaining.
And they make the trip to fellow hopefuls Maldon, currently in seventh place, on Tuesday, knowing another defeat would probably end their fading hopes for good.
Having beaten Bowers and Mildenhall in their two most recent outings, before their clash at Grays was abandoned midway through the second half, Barking saw Brentwood’s Brendan Cavalier force an early save from Emmanuel Olajide, with Tom Ranger firing another effort wide for the hosts.
Luke Stanley was also off-target for Brentwood as the first half ended goalless, but the deadlock was broken four minutes after the restart when Tony Stokes headed home from Stanley’s cross.
The home side went close to doobling their lead when Stanley rattled the crossbar, but one goal proved enough to send Justin Gardner’s men to defeat.
