BLUES RUE AS THEY PAY THE PENALTY
Barking fell to a opening day defeat at Canvey Island by a solitary goal and was a tale of two dead ball opportunities: one missed and the other taken.
Barking handed senior debuts: Jack Edwards, Joe Bruce, Gary Cohen, Darelle Russell, Daniel Cheema, Brendan Ocran and Joe Benjamin.
The Blues had an early chance to take the lead when with just 27 seconds gone Abs Seymour was fouled in the box: Darelle Russell stepped up to take responsibilty and saw his spot kick saved by Harry Palmer. On 18 minutes this miss proved costly when a Canvey free kick some yards from goal was rolled to Mitchell Gilbey who produced an unstoppable shot to make it one nil. The vistiors tried to fight back but found themselves under pressure as the home side went in search of more goals. Former Blue Martin Tuohy headed over when well placed, Emmanuel Olajide made a spectactular save tipping over a shot from the dangerous Gilbey and Frankie Merrifield found by Gilbey stuck the base of the post with Olajide stranded. However, for the last third of the half the Blues rallied with Brendan Ocran forcing Palmer into a good save turning his well hit shot round the post. This lead to a succession of corners which although produced pressure on the home goal, did not lead to anything more fruitful.
Martin Tuohy had a good opportunity early in the second half but a combination of Olajide and Joe Bruce snuffed out the danger. At the other end Daniel Cheema had a good shot well held by Palmer and on 60 minutes Joe Benjamin was introduced at the expense of J.J. Da Cruz with Gary Cohen moving back to partner Bruce. A foul on Benjamin with 76 gone produced probably effort of the second half, Abs Seymour's free kick was on target and forced Palmer to acrobatically turn the ball behind. A Benjiman shot which trickled wide, Cheema appearing to be muscularly levered off the ball in the penalty area but the referre was not interested, good footwork by Benjamin and driven cross which Russell could only turn over the bar were the last of the chances Barking had. Canvey finished strongly with Gilbey firing in another shot which Olajide did well to save and sub George Sykes with three chances: two of which were wide and Olajide denying him as well.
Post match Assistant Manager Andre Thomas tweeted: "We planned, we did it and now it's time to review it. Good effort from the Barking boys. Tuesday and Thursday to prepare for Saturday. #WeGoAgain"
The game next Saturday is against our bogey side WItham Town and three points will be welcome as we look to break a long winless streak against them and like us are pointless at this very early stage of the season.
