BARKING HELD IN SIX GOAL THRILLER
Barking were thwarted by cup experts Heybridge Swifts as they came from behind twice, the second time in second half injury time, to deny Barking all three points in what was an eventful game. Barking took a two goal lead thanks to goals either side of half time by Dan Gilchrist and Martin Tuohy. Heybridge however fought their way back to level the game but it looked like Gilchrist had won the game for Barking before a late goal broke Barking hearts.
The first 15 minutes saw little goalmouth action but both sides had chances to score after 18 minutes – Ryan Reed’s cross was deflected and found Martin Tuohy whose flicked header attempted was well saved by Heybridge goalkeeper Sambridge and the resultant counter attack saw a shot flash across goal. Tuohy went close again after 31 minutes as Heybridge failed to clear a long throw but his effort was blocked in the box. Five minutes later and Tuohy was again denied by Sambridge as this time he ran onto Dan Gilchrist’s through ball and forced the goalkeeper into a good save. As it looked like the teams would go into the second half level Hussain Jaffa nodded Abs Seymour’s free kick back across goal where it found Dan Gilchrist who nodded the ball home despite the scrambling efforts of Sambridge.
Barking hit Heybridge with a second sucker punch 3 minutes after half time as Gilchrist turned provider for Tuohy as his through ball found Martin Tuohy through on goal who took a touch before slotting the ball low into the net for his first Barking goal and their second of the afternoon. Heybridge continued to press forward and forced Bowles into saves in the 55th and 62nd minutes but got their reward after 72 minutes as a through ball found Luke Callander in on goal and he shot low under Bowles to give Heybridge a lifeline. Heybridge took advantage and put the scores level after 80 minutes as a Barking goal kick was headed back towards goal where it found Juan Luque who drove the ball home to put the score at 2-2. The score line lasted all of two minutes however as Seymour retrieved the ball in the middle of the Heybridge half and found Dan Gilchrist near the edge of the box who powered the ball into the bottom left corner past the dive of Sambridge to give Barking the lead once again. The celebrations were short-lived however as Heybridge were awarded a penalty after 84 minutes but Luque put the ball wide.
Heybridge refused to be beaten however and seventh minute of injury time after two corners were scrambled away the Barking defence could hold out no longer as a long throw was nodded home by Ryan Henshaw to secure an arguably deserved spoil of the points for Heybridge.
