BARKING BACK TO EARTH WITH A BUMP
Barking's recent unbeaten run came to an abrupt end with a defeat by bottom of the table Romford, who having suffered a midweek mauling from Heybridge Swifts were looking to at the very least restore some pride and close the gap on the teams above them.
Despite comfortably riding out some early pressure from the home side they nearly went ahead when Albert Levett's cross-cum-shot was tipped over the bar by Boro keeper Rob Budd - they appeared to be denied a penalty when Abs Seymour was clearly caught by a Romford defender. On 29 the visitors were made to pay when Greg Akpele's unchecked run across the box found Ayodeji Olukoga with a pass and his blocked effort fell nicely to Craig Jeakins to put Romford ahead. On 44 Romford were awarded a penalty when Emmanuel Olajide was adjudged to have fouled Jeakins, depsite Olajide getting a hand to Akpele's powerful penalty he could only divert it into the roof of the net.
At half time Justin Gardner made two substiutions with Kiernan Hughes-Mason and Jordan Peart replacing Adem Ramadam and Jordan Peart to add more attacking intent. However, early on this had little effect as combination of bad finishing. Barking keeper Olajide and the assistant referee's flagging for offside continually frustrated Romford. Barking gradually clawed their way back into the game but it was not until the latter stages of the game they began to look dangerous with Abs Seymour's free kick flashing just past the post and a header from Kemo Darboe cleared off the line.
Finally in the 95th minute Billy Jones clever ball released Jordan Peart and his low cross was met by Izzy Bademosi to reduce the arrears. Unfortunately it was too little too late and Romford deservedly took the three points to close the gap on Cheshunt. Barking were left to lick their wounds and consider the small matter of entertaining Bowers & Pitsea next Saturday: snowstorms permitting.
