BARKING DOUBLY IMPRESSIVE v TAKELEY

Barking advanced into the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup after a 2-0 victory at Mayesbrook Park over fellow Essex Senior League side Takeley FC. Goals for Petrit Elbi and Joe Pearman secured the win on a hot day. Barking will now face Thurlow Nunn side Stanway Rovers, again at home, as they defeated another ESL side in FC Romania.

Barking seemed to be comfortable in the early play but nearly found themselves one down just before the ten minute mark after the ball was lost in defence but the shot was wide of the goal. Takeley seemed to be getting in the ascendancy but the Blues nearly had the opener thanks to a counterattack as Liam Burgess set Petrit Elbi through on goal but the Takeley goalkeeper Josh Knight was equal to the shot across his body. It took until the 19th minute for the next action of any note as a dangerous Joe Pearman corner just evaded the outstretched Brad Ling when it looked it only needed a touch for a goal. The same could be said ten minutes later as Elbi fired a powerful ball across goal but no Blue was able to get a touch on the ball. A cross was finally met by a Barking head five minutes later but Elbi could not get his attempt on target from Ricky Tarbard’s delivery. Barking continued to pressure and the best chance at the time fell to an unmarked Ben O’Brien as he connected with Pearman’s in swinging cross but the header was well wide. With a minute of the first half remaining the Barking pressure finally told as O’Brien crossed the ball to Paul Oshin in the box who chested it down before volleying towards goal where Knight found it too hot to handle and spilt the ball towards Petrit Elbi who smashed the ball into the net to give the Blues the lead.

The second half started much tighter than the first ended but John Bricknell had his first chance of the game shortly after the restart thanks to a through ball from Elbi but his attempt to dink it over the goalkeeper was too close to Knight who gathered comfortably. It was nearly déjà vu after 54 minutes as Oshin and Elbi combined yet again but Elbi saw his shot blocked en route to goal. Barking were always the team more comfortable on possession and came close to a second with half hour remaining as some good football led to Pearman shooting through a line of defenders but Knight was equal to it. It seemed like there was to be a nervous last 15 minutes for the Blues as they failed to get a second but Elbi managed to find Timi Abiola down the left wing – again playing at left back. Abiola got through a gap in defenders into the box before losing the ball only for it to rebound off him and find Joe Pearman who shot low and powerfully across the goalkeeper and into the bottom right corner of the net.

The second goal took all fight out of Takeley and apart from a late free kick for Burgess which was just wide of the post there was little action of note in the last 15 minutes. Barking have now scored six goals without reply in their first two competitive games this season and will hope to continue their good form as they face tenants West Essex on Tuesday at Mayesbrook Park.
