Barking just about progressed to the second round of the Essex Senior League Cup thanks to a 93rd minute goal over Omari Delgado which gave them a 1-0 victory over Sporting Bengal. Bengal were also down to ten men after the first half sending off of their goalkeeper meant an outfield player played the majority of the game in goal but the Blues found it hard to break Bengal  down – finding themselves offside frequently.

The Blues had their first chance after seven minutes Billy Rix hooked a near post corner over. There was a chance for Barking after 16 minutes as Omari Delgado found himself through on goal but was denied by the goalkeeper who after narrowing the angle palmed the shot away. Three minutes later it turned sour for Dwayne Espirit as he was sent off for fouling James Peagram outside the box after Peagram had put the ball past him. The sending off was probably harsh considering there were two other defenders around Peagram and another making his way towards the goal line but Bengal had no choice but to put an outfield player in goal with no sub keeper on the bench. Bengal tightened up however and they actually had the next chance of note after 40 minutes as a through ball saw a striker though on goal but he managed to sky his attempt. Two minutes later and the Blues finally had the chance to test the stand in ‘keeper as Matheus Santos received the ball on the edge of the box but his shot looped onto the roof of the net.

Bengal had the first chance of the second after five minutes as again a striker found his way through on goal but this time the attempt was dragged wide. James Peagram finally had his first chance after 58 minutes but after latching onto a long ball his shot was just wide. Barking made two changes at  the 60 minute mark as Jaconelli and Santos were replaced by Steve Willis and Ben O’Brien and Willis was quickly involved as his cross found Max Watters at the far post but his strike with the outside of the foot was wide of the mark. Ashley Wackers-Kyriacou intercepted a pass from the goalkeeper after 70 minutes but his powerful sidefoot was straight at the goalkeeper. Michael Green was called into action two minutes later as he tipped a cross/shot away from goal for a corner. The Blues continued to press however as Watters played Peagram through on goal but he had to stretch to shoot and saw his shot go just wide. As the game entered its final ten minutes Glen Golby played Delgado through on goal but his powerful shot cleared the crossbar. Barking did finally get their breakthrough in the 93rd minute – as a defender tried to hook the ball away from Ben O’Brien he inadvertently toe poked  the ball towards goal where Omari Delgado pounced to muscle off a defender before slotting low into the net. While this was going on the linesman had his flag up for offside against Delgado but the referee correctly overruled the decision and after brief consultation after the goal it was given.

Barking still had time to nearly double their lead as James Peagram collected a ball over the top but he smashed the ball against the crossbar. Barking will now face Burnham Ramblers on January 10th in the second round of the Essex Senior League Cup.
