Barking take the sting out of Basildon
A brace from Joe Pearman helped the Blues to a 3-0 win away at Basildon. Joe Pearman opened the scoring after only five minutes before doubling the lead in the second half. Ben O’Brien then added a header just before the end of the match.
Barking took the lead after five minutes with the first chance of the game – a cross from the right wing by Ben Higgs caused danger in the Basildon box as they failed to clear and the rebound of James Peagram put the ball in the path of Joe Pearman who drove the ball past the right hand side of the goalkeeper to give the Blues an early lead. The Blues came close to doubling the lead after 12 minutes as Petrit Elbi finished off some good work with a cross that found Joe Staunton but he shot wide. Elbi had his own chance three minutes later as he left a defender on the floor but shot wide. The 20th minute saw a James Peagram free kick flash wide of the post with the last chance of the half falling to Basildon after 31 minutes but Billy Rix was on hand with a clean last ditch tackle to prevent danger on the Barking goal.
Basildon started the second half stronger and with 49 minutes on the clock a dangerous cross from the left wing flashed across goal but luckily for Barking there was no one on hand to convert. Barking doubled their lead after 54 minutes as a dangerous Barking free kick was headed out to Brad Ling who played it out to Joe Pearman wide and free in the box – he had time to close in goal before wrong-footing the goalkeeper beating him at the near post with a powerful shot. James Peagram had the chance to make it three with half hour remaining but he volleyed straight at the Basildon ‘keeper. Peagram had another chance a minute later from a counterattack but his attempt was again at the goalkeeper. Basildon shut down the Blues from that point and had two chances of their own as the game wore on with Rob Hatton forced into his first save after 66 minutes as he palmed away a free kick and with the game entering the last ten minutes he had sub Matheus Santos and Billy Rix to thank as they made brave blocks at the far post from a corner.
The Blues managed to get a third after 86 minutes as substitute Ashley Wackers-Kyriacou whipped in a free kick which has headed to the far post by a Basildon defender where it was met by Ben O’Brien who headed the ball into the ground and the net to round off a comfortable victory for the Blues.
