Barking sting Basildon United to strengthen grip at top
Barking opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Essex Senior League thanks to a 3-0 win away to Basildon United.
The Blues had drawn 1-1 with the Bees earlier in the season, but were keen to strengthen their grip on the title race with all three points this time around.
Joe Pearman got the Blues off to a flyer at the Stuart Bingham Stadium, netting from 10 yards inside the opening ten minutes.
The Mayesbrook Park club were unfortunate not to add a second before the break when a James Peagram free-kick evaded everyone, when all it needed was a touch.
The Blues, however, did double their lead early in the second half with Joe Pearman again the scorer as he turned in a splendid cross.
Peagram and fellow striker Petrit Elbi went close to sealing the win for Barking, but both were denied brilliantly by Basildon keeper Joe Robbins.
The Bees stopper was at it again soon after, keeping out a Pearman shot from close range to deny the Blues forward a hat-trick.
Barking did, however, add a third before the end of the match as Ben O’Brien nodded in an Ashley Wackers-Kyriacou free-kick at the back post.
It was a second successive league win for the Blues after beating Takeley on Saturday, and they will hope to make it three in a row at Sporting Bengal United this weekend.
