BARKING HELD BY BUZZING BASILDON
Barking were held to a 1-1 draw at Mayesbrook Park by a resilient Basildon side. Omari Delgado opened the scoring after twelve minutes but Reece Tranter popped in to slide home an equaliser before half time.
The only chance of the first ten minutes fell to the Blues in the first two minutes as Omari Delgado quickly turned with his back to goal and shot from a narrow angle but it was too close to the goalkeeper to cause an issue. Delgado did open the scoring however after 12 minutes as a clearance from goalkeeper Jack Kelly was flicked on by Ben O’Brien, his header was in-between two defenders and Omari Delgado pounced to run in on goal before dinking the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. Basildon had a chance for an immediate equaliser from a dangerous free kick but Kelly was able to collect easily. Basildon won another dangerous freekick after 27 minutes – Kelly moved slightly to his right but the ball went to his near post forcing a diving save back across himself to prevent a goal. Kelly was powerless however after 35 minutes as Jay Taylor attempted to head a Basildon clearance back to him but didn’t get enough on it giving Tranter the time to pounce and slot low into the bottom left corner of the net for 1-1.
The first half finished with little else of note and the second half started the same as it took until the 60th minute for another chance – Basildon countered with Tranter played through on goal, Kelly came out quickly to narrow the angle and as Tranter attempted to lift it over him he tipped the attempt onto the bar and away from danger. The warning seemed to spark the Blues into life and Delgado had a chance to add to his tally two minutes later as he found space in the box but dragged his shot wide. As the game entered its last twenty minutes Basildon saw another chance miss the target and after 79 minutes an inviting cross across goal by Petrit Elbi just needed a touch which James Peagram threw himself at the ball to get but could only put the ball wide. At the 85th minute mark the game became more open as both sides headed chances wide, with Elbi heading a Ben Higgs cross away from goal. Barking came very close in the last minute of normal time as a corner from Elbi was headed towards to the top corner by Ben O’Brien only for the Basildon defender on the line to block the attempt and clear the ball. Barking had time for one more great chance as pressure caused a scramble in the box with the ball eventually falling to Petrit Elbi who lashed a volley at goal but it was too close to the goalkeeper who palmed the ball away from goal.
Both teams had to settle for a draw, both sides will feel they had chances to win the game but would accept the draw was probably the fair result.
