Barking were deservedly beaten at the Old Spotted Dog in a top of the table clash as they fell to a 4-2 defeat. Barking did take an early lead thanks to Petrit Elbi but were pegged back thanks to a hat trick from Jay Knight and Ryan Reed with James Peagram also netting for the Yellows. Both sides saw a player sent off with John Bricknell seeing red for Barking.

Clapton had the first good chance after three minutes as a low cross found Knight at the penalty spot but his powerful low attempt was well saved by Hatton using his feet. The save seemed even more important two minutes later as a through ball let Petrit Elbi through the right wing of the box and with him seemingly in a better position for a cross than a shot his low attempt wrong-footed the goalkeeper and found the back of the net. Clapton continued to press but Barking came close to a second after 16 minutes as Ricky Tarbard’s cross was headed down with Steve Willis finding a route to goal but he was denied by a fantastic last-ditch tackle to poke the ball away from him. Clapton pressured and got their reward after 21 minutes as Jay Taylor was penalised for handball while attempting to block a Jay Knight shot. Knight stepped up and Hatton went the right way but the penalty was too powerful and Clapton had their equaliser. The last chance of the half also fell to Clapton as the first half entered its final ten minutes thanks to a counterattack but a low cross from the left was skied over the bar from close range.

Minutes of madness at the start of the second half changed the course of the game as firstly Clapton were awarded a penalty straight from kick off – the ball was played long into the box with Tarbard failing to deal with before bouncing and in attempting to clear the ball scythed down the Clapton striker. Knight stepped up again and this time Hatton went the wrong way. Clapton doubled their lead a minute later from a counterattack as the Blues failed to clear their lines leaving Ryan Reed through on goal – Hatton did well to save the first attempt but the ball landed at the feet of Reed who managed to squeeze the ball home for the score line Clapton 3-1 Barking. Clapton nearly made it four but a free header from a free kick was over the bar. Barking found themselves with a route back into the game after 66 minutes as under pressure the Clapton goalkeeper failed to clear the ball with sub John Bricknell crossing for James Peagram to hook hom and halve the deficit. Petrit Elbi volleyed into the side netting before Barking got a man advantage as a Clapton defender saw red for a second bookable offence (handball). Unfortunately this advantage lasted 2 minutes as John Bricknell saw red for a kick out at a Clapton defender after conceding a foul. The Blues issues were compounded two minutes later (74) as a low cross was deflected off Steve Willis to the feet of Jay Knight to smash the ball home. Sub Glen Golby nearly halved the deficit a minute later but his header hit the root of the post.

Barking had chances before the end of the game but Omari Delgado saw his curving attempt go just wide while Ben O’Brien’s header was cleared off the line.
