Barking dealt title blow by Romania

FC Romania dealt a blow to Barking’s hopes and enhanced their own thanks to a 2-0 win at Mayesbrook Park. Late goals for Cosmin Sandu and Sergiu Pitaru were enough to deal the Blues a blow as they challenged for the ESL title.

There were two half chances in the first ten minutes as first Romania saw a shot clear the bar before Billy Rix’s header was blocked en route to goal. Barking went close over 24 minutes but they failed to capitalise as Petrit Elbi played James Peagram through on goal but he failed to convert. 2 minutes later and it was Romania’s time to go close but ‘keeper Rob Hatton was able to palm the cross/shot over. With the first half entering its last 15 Liam Burgess dinked the ball into the box with the Romania keeper Adrian Darabant failing to collect but he was relieved to see Ben O’Brien fail to hook the ball towards goal. The last chance of the half fell to Barking ten minutes later as James Peagram headed off target from a Petrit Elbi cross.

FCR failed to create a chance from a dangerous free kick after 52 minutes but five minutes later a long ball put their striker in on goal over the top but Rob Hatton stood tall to make a vital save from the best chance of the game. It took until the halfway point of the second half for the Blues to register a significant chance as James Peagram stepped up to take a free kick but saw Darabant tip his dangerous shot over the bar. Peagram went even closer after 73 minutes from another free kick as he managed to leave Darabant wrong footed but unfortunately his attempt smacked the post. As the game entered the final ten minutes FCR took the lead as a corner floated to the far post where it was headed back across goal and found Cosmin Sandu who volleyed home despite the best efforts of the Blues players on the line. Barking pushed forward but struggled to create good chances until the 89th minute as as a corner led to a goalmouth scramble which no one managed to convert but was cleared for another corner. The corner came down near the penalty spot where Steve Willis connected with a powerful volley which was too close to Darabant. Barking were punished for missing these chances as from Darabant FCR counterattacked with numbers leaving a striker through on goal – again Hatton was equal to it and managed to palm the ball away but this time it fell at the feet of Sergiu Pitaru who tapped the ball home to secure all three points for FCR Romania and remind Barking that the title race isn’t over.
