BARKING FALL TO FIRST DEFEAT IN 13
Barking's impressive run of eight straight victories was halted after a 2-1 defeat to Sawbridgeworth Town at Mayesbrook Park – only their second league defeat of the season and the first at Mayesbrook Park. Barking did take the lead thanks to an early Ben O’Brien header but two goals either side of half time handed the three points to Sawbridgeworth.
Barking started the stronger with a high line and their pressure paid off as Petrit Elbi won the ball off a defender in midfielder before finding his way to the right wing before floating a cross to the far post where it found Ben O’Brien who rose to nod the ball past Tuzzeo in the Sawbridgeworth goal and into the roof of the net. The lead only lasted nine minutes however as a low left wing cross led to a blocked shot which looped in the air – as Michael Green came forward to collect the ball it was just poked away from by the striker who collected the ball and tapped it into the net. Sawbridgeworth had another chance at the 25 minute mark thanks to a short corner routine but Brad Ling headed a goalbound shot away from goal. Barking then hit the woodwork twice in the last 5 minutes of the half – firstly James Peagram saw his shot palmed onto the post by Tuzzeo after he had been played through on goal by John Bricknell before Bricknell himself saw his long range swerving pile driver smack the crossbar just before the half time whistle with Tuzzeo stranded.
The second half started with nothing of note until another corner for Sawbridgeworth saw a sidefoot comfortably clear the bar. The 65th minute proved pivotal however as a long throw from Sawbridgeworth found a striker through on goal with the Barking defence static, partly thanks to a linesman flag that was half raised, the first attempt was well saved by Green but unluckily the ball fell back to the striker who volleyed home. The goal was controversial due to the half raised flag but the Blues failed to play to the whistle and were punished. Barking failed to regain a foothold in the game and were nearly 3-1 down with ten minutes as the striker managed to poke the ball past Green but Ricky Tarbard was alive to clear the ball before it crossed the line. Barking thought they were going to get an equaliser with some desperate pressure at the end but Omari Delgado saw his goalbound shot plucked away from the net by a fantastic one handed diving save from Tuzzeo to keep all three points for his team.
Sawbridgeworth therefore took all three points away from Mayesbrook Park but the Blues were relieved to hear that the sides around them failed to capitalise on the defeat to close the gap at the top of the table.
