HARINGEY HALTED AGAIN BY BARKING

Barking dispatched another Isthmian League North side with ease as for the second season running they progressed in the London Senior Cup thanks to a double from Sam Shaban and Tony Martin at the expense of Haringey Borough.

The visitors took the lead after 15 minutes as Teddy Stacey’s free kick found Sam Shaban in the box, he laid the ball back to Jerrold Cobblah and his chipped cross found Tony Martin who headed the ball back across former Blue Jack West-Astuti and into the net. Former Haringey player Akilijo Balliu went close to doubling the lead after 25 minutes thanks to some trickery before shooting at West-Astuti but he could do nothing moments later as Fahad Nyanja’s ball over the defence found Cobblah on the right wing who provided again, this time his low cross was just behind Juwon Akintunde but it did find the onrushing Sam Shaban who timed his run perfectly to sweetly strike the ball home. Haringey were never totally out of the game as they seemed comfortable in possession without ever really breaking Barking down or putting keeper Dan Purdue under pressure until just before the half time whistle, as a fizzing long range shot smacked the edge of the crossbar.

It was a similar story at the beginning of the second half, with the only chance of note in the first twenty minutes being a Borough half volley from the edge of the box which just cleared the crossbar. Barking punished Haringey for their continuing defensive frailties halfway through the second half, this time sub Izzy Bademosi latched onto a ball over the defensive line from Fahad Nyanja, his low cross scrambled around the box before falling at the feet of Sam Shaban who gratefully powered the ball home from close range to give Barking an unassailable three goal lead. Purdue was forced into his first meaningful save minutes later with a comfortable tip over the bar but in reality for a fair amount of possession the home team never really looked like scoring. Salt was rubbed into the wounds for Haringey as full time loomed as substitute Georgios Aresti was sent off for a second yellow card offence. The full time whistle ensued Barking’s comfortable progression into the third round where we will meet AFC Croydon Athletic.

We are back home on Saturday afternoon as Hullbridge Sports are the visitors to the Lawtech Stadium with a 3pm kick off.
