REPORT
ADDED TIME IS WINNING TIME FOR BARKING
For Barking it went from the stuff of nightmares to the stuff of dreams as they fought back from 3-0 down with just 25 minutes left to win 4-3 with virtually no time left on the clock. Ramiah Mills scored the winner, Charlie Thomson scoring his first for the Blues as the equaliser while Alfie Attrill and also a first for Arthur Jeans had pulled a goal back.
It was not a first half of as much action, Sam Edwards headed straight at former Blue Harvey Simson after five minutes and Finn Rushton was called into action 15 minutes later, palming a shot that seemed destined for the corner of the net and then recovering excellently to block the rebound. Rob Clark went close after 25 minutes with a curling effort but Newham looked dangerous on the counterattack and this was proved so with nine minutes first half remaining, as they countered down the left wing before a cut back into the box found Remarle Lawrence who slotted the ball home.
Barking regrouped for the second half and went close with ten minutes gone – Mills set Tyreece Robertson through on goal who found himself one on one with Simson who kept himself big and denied Robertson with his body. This save seemed to be pivotal as Newham doubled their lead moments later – a short corner was driven into the box from the corner of the box where it found Chuks Uzor who managed to direct the ball home with his head.
It got even worse for Barking shortly after, Newham countered a long throw attempt and it was 3-0 on 62 as Lawrence got his second.
Barking started their comeback just two minutes after: a Sam Edwards’ corner was passed back out to him, his centre was scrambled back across goal and ended with Arthur Jeans heading against the crossbar and then following up to head the rebound home himself for his first in a Barking shirt as well as Barking’s first on the day.
The deficit was down to one goal six minutes later, Robertson’s cutback cross was squeezed away from goal but only to the edge of the box where it found the onrushing Alfie Attrill who blasted the ball into the back of the net.
Newham got a foothold back in the game however and it took until the 80th minute for another chance of note as Simson did well to deny Barnett who shot powerfully from outside of the box, flying up to palm the ball out for a corner. Substitutions had seen Max Harbrow change from right back to central midfield where he had looked dangerous, and it seemed like Barking had their equaliser after he was scythed down in the box after a marauding run with 85 minutes played. Lekan Osideko stepped up to take the penalty, but Simson went the right way and denied Barking an equaliser.
The drama was not over however as we entered injury time, Mills turned Ivan Imausen on the right wing, who responded by holding onto the legs of Mills, executing in the process a technically sound rugby tackle. Unfortunately for him, he had already been booked and the referee ended his stay on the pitch with a second yellow card. To compound their misery, Max Harbrow swept a perfect free kick into the box, and as everyone jumped to meet it, Charlie Thomson rose highest to meet the ball and head it home with Simson not quick enough to meet the cross.
Newham had not been fast with some of their restarts, and despite that goal being at 90+2, we played on for another four minutes – enough time for Simson to palm a speculative cross/shot out for a corner. Osideko’s corner swung away from goal, but Thomson headed it back towards goal where it found Ramiah Mills, who met the ball on the bounce to volley it powerfully into the net, causing delirium on the pitch and in the stands as Barking had pulled off an unlikely comeback.
There was time for a restart, the ball to go forward for Newham but that was it, leaving both sides to wonder what had just happened, albeit with differing emotions.
We do not have a midweek fixture and return home next Saturday for the first time in a month to face Hullbridge Sports with a 3pm kick-off.
